Hello, and welcome to Progressive Action, Global Exchange actions for this week! We start out with some check-ins and discussion questions for your chapter before moving on to Priority Actions. If you get through it all, there are additional actions you can do at the end, or take home with you for later!
1. Check in
Take a moment to discuss how your chapter is growing, operating and protecting itself.
Welcome everyone, including newcomers. Explain what PAGE is and what you’ve been up to so far.
Check in with your group about how things are going so far. What’s working well? What isn’t? How often are you meeting? Would it make sense to meet more or less often?
Check in about how you are communicating and reaching out to new members so far.
How is your group managing privacy? Does anyone have new privacy concerns relating to their participation in PAGE? Does anyone have any concerns about how to reach out and invite new members? About managing the list of members and their contact info?
It is each group’s responsibility to create and follow guidelines that make sense for their context. PAGE Coordinating Committee is currently working to develop recommendations for chapters to improve their online security.
In the meantime, you can also refer to the PAGE’s starter toolkit for pointers on communication and privacy.
Send your feedback on privacy and anything else to email@example.com, with with “Feedback” in the subject line. Thank you!
2. Delegate responsibilities
Take a tally of what your group has been doing so far, and make sure everyone who wants to is helping out!
Who’s responsible for scheduling meetings, choosing the meeting place, making sure there are snacks, etc?
Who’s responsible for handling group membership? (Keeping a secure list of membership, getting new members up to speed…)
Who’s responsible for taking notes and communicating with the PAGE Coordinating Committee? Who receives weekly actions and sends information back up to firstname.lastname@example.org?
Who’s in charge of social media (making sure everyone in your chapter is connected, following conversations on Facebook & Twitter and posting on behalf of your chapter)?
Who’s in charge of links to local activist groups? (more on this below!)
Who will be your press liaison? (more on this in coming weeks!)
3. Brainstorm on the role of your PAGE chapter in the coming months
Talk with your chapter members about what the role of PAGE and its members can be.
Some questions to spark discussion:
What is the role of US-Americans abroad and global citizens in the time of the Muslim ban and the closing off of the USA to the outside world?
What should your group be doing during this time to take a stand against racism and Islamophobia?
What are ways that you can positively interact with your local community?
Discuss and send your ideas to email@example.com, with other feedback from this meeting, with “Feedback” in the subject line. We’ll provide a summary of responses in next week’s actions!
4. Stop Bannon with a call (*please do this one!*)
From the website 5 Calls:
“Trump has removed the existing Director of National Intelligence and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff from the “principles committee” of the National Security Council and replaced them with his Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon. Bannon is the former leader of Breitbart News, an anti-Semitic and white supremacist right-wing opinion and "news" outlet whose notable output includes articles comparing Planned Parenthood to the Holocaust.
The purpose of the National Security Council is to ensure that the president has the best possible advice from his Cabinet, the military, and the intelligence community before making major decisions. Steve Bannon not only lacks the considerable experience needed to be the principal foreign policy adviser to the president, he has personally avowed a desire to "bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment." Allowing Trump to continue to be guided by Bannon in matters of national security will bring about the deaths of many innocent people.
Call this office:
Senate Committee on Homeland Security
Why you're calling this office:
They're asking for commentary on Bannon's appointment to the NSC.
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling today because I am outraged by the appointment of Steve Bannon to the National Security Council. I expect an immediate stand against both Bannon's appointment and the removal of more experienced staff from the "principals committee."
Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.
[IF LEAVING A VOICEMAIL: please leave your full [home] street address to ensure your call is tallied]
5. Stop Breitbart with some tweets (*please do this one!*)
This action is from Wall-of-Us and targets Bannon’s racist propaganda company Breitbart News.
“Wall-of-Us decided to partner with with Sleeping Giants on a targeted campaign to strip Breitbart of its ad dollars. Over the past ten weeks, Sleeping Giants has weakened Breitbart by stopping their ad dollars from 820 companies! Here is a running list. Let’s make that number skyrocket this week. And let’s tell them why we are doing this.
Tip: Sleeping Giants wants us to focus on Amazon and AT&T; no word from these Breitbart advertisers yet.
There are two options. For both options tag @slpng_giants and use these hashtags #LooseBannon #WallofUs. You can also tag @PAGEofdemocracy.
Option A: Go to AdStrike and click on their templates to call out brands one by one, or sign up for Buffer, and AdStrike will literally do the work for you. The benefit of Option A is that you don't have to go to Breitbart's site at all. You can also go to go to Sleeping Giants twitter site and retweet/repost from there.
But AdStrike doesn't yet have templates for all of the advertisers, which is why we are offering Option B.
Option B: [*this option will give you a wider reach, but it has its drawbacks because it gives Breitbart more clicks, so please weigh that.]
1. Go to Breitbart.com (we know, eeew). If you can, open an "Incognito" window before you go onto the Breitbart site so that your search history isn't linked to Breitbart.
2. Take a screenshot of an ad next to their content (double eeew).
3. Tweet the screenshot to the company with a polite note asking them to stop advertising.
6. Celebrate Black History Month
It’s Black History Month, a time when we celebrate the accomplishments and history of Black Americans.
Check out this list of books on black history; you might be able to order some from abroad on your e-reader if there isn’t an English bookstore near by.
It’s also a great time to make sure we’re supporting Black artists and writers. Check out this list of modern non-fiction for Black History Month and consider adding some to your reading list.
7. Register with: Swing Left!
If you’re from the USA, Swing Left is a new website which allows you to identify and support districts near your hometown that might swing Democratic in the next election.
Visit the website, find the swing district closest to you, and sign up for their mailing list. You’ll receive a curated list of actions you can do to support that Swing district - some of which you may be able to do from wherever you are currently living!
8. Register with: 5 Calls!
If you’re a super-star PAGE member, you might want to make calls more often than your PAGE group meets! Register with 5 calls.
If you want to stay super engaged from abroad, register and commit to making 5 Calls per day.
PAGE will continue to pull actions from 5 calls (such as action 5) each week in the weekly actions.
9. Final note: The situation with the immigration ban is rapidly changing. PAGE will post a suggested action relating to immigration on their Facebook page this week.
Thank you for your participation in PAGE!
