Weekly Actions: May 14, 2017

May 14, 2017

Priority actions for this week:

  • Just say no to racist drug wars.  Jeff Sessions dealt a major blow to those working on criminal justice reform this week, as he ordered federal prosecutors to pursue mandatory minimum sentencing. From the ACLU: "Mandatory minimums are widely understood as racist, destructive to families and communities, and fundamentally unfair.”

    • Sign this petition to oppose this policy.

    • Learn more about how these kinds of policies target communities of color and benefit private prisons. Consider holding a screening of 13th in your PAGE group if you haven’t done so already.

  • Learn about the President’s Nuclear Powers President Nixon once bragged that he could kill 70 million people within 25 minutes if he wanted to do so; terrifyingly, Trump has that same power.

    • Listen to this podcast about the president’s nuclear powers before your PAGE group meeting and discuss.

    • Learn more about the bill that’s been introduced to curb the president’s nuclear power.

    • Sign this petition, and if you’re US-American, use the call script on the petition website to call your Members of Congress to ask that they co-sponsor H.R. 669/S. 200.

    • Want to do more to save the world from global destruction? Consider joining the PAGE working group on foreign policy, which is working to integrate our network into the global anti-war movement. Email us at engage.with.page@gmail.com to join up.

Extra Actions:

  • Get Inspired: Madrid Resistance, a PAGE-affiliate group in Spain, held a neat event called Hearing the Call, where folks told stories about what inspired them to act.

    • Check out YouTube videos from the event here!

    • If you’re interested in hearing how Madrid Resistance put this event together, get in touch at: madridresistance@gmail.com

  • Ground your activism in love: Feeling tired? Wondering how we’re going to keep this up? Black feminist and activist bell hooks has some wisdom to share about how to ground your activist practice (actually, your entire life) in love, so we might continue to thrive. Check out some highlights here and if you can, order the book!
