Weekly Actions: May 28, 2017
May 28, 2017
Dear PAGE Activist,
It’s been an exciting week for resistors abroad: we’ve been busy and getting attention for it too! American Expats for Positive change, a PAGE friend in Italy, protested Trump during his visit to Rome and got covered in major news outlets. Progressive Americans Action League, the PAGE- affiliate group in Norway, organized a viewing of 13th and got a shout-out from director/producer Ava DuVernay.
Below you’ll find our priority actions for this week, which, as always, are curated for US-Americans abroad and global citizens. If you haven’t yet gotten the chance, be sure to check out our Anti-Oppression Guide, share it with your group, and share your thoughts on it with us.
PAGE Global Coordinating Committee
Protect federal standards on health, environment, and labor. The House passed the Regulatory Accountability Act (RAA) in January, it recently passed in Senate committee and now it’s going to the Senate floor for a full vote. The Environmental Defense Fund calls the RAA “the scariest legislation you’ve never heard of.” It introduces roadblocks in an already heavily bureaucratic process for regulating health, environment, and labor hazards, and jeopardizes regulations that already exist.
Act. Call your Senator to express your opposition to the RAA. 5calls.org provides a quick summary and script; you can also educate yourself about your own Senators’ positions first. (Tip: Use the free app Stance to make calls to your reps easily and for free, even from overseas!)
Share how a lack of environmental regulation affects people in your country of residence. Email us at email@example.com to share ideas, photos, and testimonials about how bad climate change and environmental policy affects your community.
Read up on the Budget: Trump released the full version of the 2018 budget this week, with dramatic cuts to environmental programs, foreign aid, and anti-poverty initiatives. For instance, international family planning programs would be eliminated entirely.
We’ll be watching this closely over the next couple weeks. Let us know if you’d like to help monitor and plan actions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
