Weekly Actions: July 22, 2018

July 23, 2018

Dear PAGE Activist,

This week we were treated to a series of international incidents embarrassments, as the US president insulted allies, undermined alliances, and showed his fealty to the ultimate higher power, Vladimir Putin. Trump’s actions on the world stage are significant, but let’s not let them obscure the US government’s violations of basic human rights back home.

This week we saw upsetting videos of traumatized children being returned to their parents after being separated by ICE, and read about children kept in freezing cold cells, stripped naked, given inedible food, given forced injections when they “misbehaved,” and told by guards “This is it for you. You’re fucked.” We learned about sexual abuse in ICE detention centers, where guards abuse their power over migrant women. The stories reported here are no doubt the tip of the iceberg.

Forced family separation is nothing new in our country. But we can work together to end it now. This week’s actions focus on ending the torture of children, reuniting separated families, and working to fight Trump’s hate with our love for all human beings, especially the most affected by structural oppression. We also learn more about the youth-led climate movement Zero Hour, and provide new and ongoing actions about how you can get out the vote for November’s election!

As always, our actions are curated for US Americans abroad and global citizens. If you’re new to PAGE, get in touch with us at engage.with.page@gmail.com, or check out our website and updated toolkit. Please help us spread the word about PAGE by forwarding this email to friends, family members, and like-minded acquaintances, where they can join our community by clicking on this link to our sign-up sheet.

In solidarity,

Priority Actions

  • End Family Separation and torture of children! We know you’ve been following the horrors of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the executor of our cruel family separation crisis, authored by the Trump administration. But this agency was created only in 2003, and was notably placed under the Department of Homeland Security - effectively framing immigration, and immigrants, as a threat. Now, we understand that these ICE officers are the threat themselves - and it’s up to us to undo the structures that put them in place.

    • Watch this video from CBS-Chicago news, in which children recount their painful and traumatic experiences in an ICE shelter. Consider how the damage these children have experienced is likely to be lasting.

    • Sign the petition. One first easy step - use your voice to demand that the Trump administration reunite every child with his or her family now. Click here to sign!

    • Participate in a rolling hunger strike, or support one in your community! Mothers who are locked away from their children are engaging in hunger strikes to protest their separation from their children. Starting on July 26th, the legal deadline for the Trump Administration to reunite kids and their parents, Families Belong Together is organizing activists to join them in solidarity. Activists in each place will strike for 2-3 days at a time, and then the strike will move to a new location - until the families are reunited and free. Click here to sign up to strike or support!

    • Support journalists covering this story. The Texas Tribune is moving two full-time reporters to the Rio Grande Valley to establish a second border bureau, which will be dedicated to covering the family separation crisis. The newspaper is crowdfunding their border coverage, with a goal of raising $35,000 by July 31st. Click here to make a donation and support their important work!

    • Bail out activists who are putting their bodies on the line! Activists with United We Dream are taking direct action in the movement to Abolish ICE, for example by occupying the street outside Miramar ICE facility in Florida. Meet Guillermo, who is just one of those arrested. Then click here to contribute to their bailout / legal funds to show these heroes we are with them!

    • Tell tech firms to #CancelTheContract with ICE! The immigrants rights group RAICES recently refused a $250,000 donation from the tech firm Salesforce because they refuse to sever their contract with ICE. Sign these petitions to tell MicrosoftSalesforce, and other tech companies to stop profiting off cruelty, and make sure you share on social media! Many of these petitions will be personally delivered by July 26th, so try to sign by then!

  • Learn about the Youth-Led Movement to Fight Climate Change! This weekend, youth activists are converging on Washington, D.C. to spread their message that action for climate change can’t wait any longer.

    • Learn about Zero Hour by reading this article by Iris Fen Gillingham, who the leads the partnerships team for Zero Hour, published in Teen Vogue, whose journalism is important to follow these days! Then check out the movement’s website here, and kick in a donation!

    • Understand what we’re up against, by reading about how the fossil fuel industry is spending billions to kill U.S. climate action. Talk with your PAGE pals, friends and family about how we can fight such a powerful foe to save our planet.

  • Join our Global Get Out the Vote Efforts! Let’s do our part to make sure that US-Americans living abroad know they can vote from abroad, are informed about upcoming elections, and are registered to receive absentee ballots.

    • Join our GOTV organizing crew! Pick a person from your group to join our GOTV Abroad WhatsApp group to get tips and tricks to register people from wherever you are. Send us an email at engage.with.page@gmail.com with the point person’s WhatsApp contact number, and we’ll add them to the group.

    • Make a pledge to GOTV when it matters most! Studies show the most effective way to get potential voters to actually go to the polls is via conversations on the weekend before Election Day (this year, Nov. 2-5). A coalition led by Swing Left is organizing #TheLastWeekend, where activists have already pledged over 10,000 volunteer hours to GOTV that weekend. How many hours can YOU give to save our democracy? Sign up here!

    • Sign up to phone bank with Democrats Abroad! According to DA, voters who are contacting from abroad are more than 3 times as likely to request a ballot! First, sign up for an account with Democrats Abroad. Then, click here to get in their system and sign up for the level of commitment that works for you.

    • As always, join fellow US-Americans abroad to Get Out The Vote for November elections! VoteFromAbroad.Org has all the info you need to register you and your friends abroad. To share widely with friends and on social media, like “VoteFromAbroad” on Facebook.  Don’t forget to use this form to organize and track the number of people you register to vote and tweet us @PAGEofdemocracy to tell us about your efforts, using #NotTooFarAwayToVote!

    • Primaries are kicking into full swingPostcards for Voters has put together a helpful list of primaries and ways that you can send postcards to voters in states with primaries happening soon. If you haven’t already, take a look and learn about when your next election is coming up!

**** Thank you for your progressive action ****
