Weekly Actions: Sept. 2, 2018

September 2, 2018

Dear PAGE Activist,

This week we learned that the US is denying citizenship rights to US Americans living at the border, accusing hundreds, maybe thousands, of Latinx folks of holding fraudulently issued birth certificates. The Washington Post reported that people applying for passports - with US birth certificates - “are being jailed in immigration detention centers and entered into deportation proceedings.” Also this week, Bank of America reportedly froze bank accounts while demanding that customers verify their citizenship status.

News like this is frightening, especially given what it may portend, or that it may last indefinitely. This week, we’ll show support to immigrants, and fight hard on two fronts to ensure that our future is more progressive, and that no one is denied rights and citizenship because of the color of their skin. First, we’ll speak out against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, whose record shows he does not support reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, environmental protections, affordable healthcare and workers rights. And second, with just 64 days until the midterms, it’s time to make sure that everyone in your community is registered and ready to vote against hate - and for a future where everyone is cared for and valued.

As always, our actions are curated for US Americans abroad and global citizens. If you’re new to PAGE, get in touch with us at engage.with.page@gmail.com, or check out our website and updated toolkit. Please help us spread the word about PAGE by forwarding this email to friends, family members, and like-minded acquaintances, where they can sign-up to join our community.

In solidarity,

Progressive Action, Global Exchange

  • Be vocal in your solidarity with immigrants. Immigrant communities in the US and around the world continue to be under attack. This week, take time to show your support through petitions, direct action, donations and more.

    • Tell Bank of America: Stop Asking Customers about Citizenship: Sign this petition and to ask the bank to end the discriminatory, unfair and unnecessary practice of asking customers about citizenship. If Bank of America is your bank, contact them with a letter or social media post telling them you oppose this policy. Then follow through, and change banks if they don’t change their policy!

    • Prepare for the #WeekofWitness. Communities of faith will come together for the "Week of Witness" on September 7th-16th. Across the country, they'll hold vigils and lullaby sing-alongs to raise awareness about the ongoing separation of parents and children and to declare that #FamiliesBelongTogether. See if an event is happening in your hometown. From abroad, you can also participate by hosting a vigil, and posting a lullaby online with Families Belong Together International.

    • Donate for DACA. Right now, the DACA renewal process is open, but still expensive. Donate to show solidarity with someone who needs to pay the fee.

  • Join Progressive Americans Action League (PAAL) in Oslo and #StopKavanaugh this Tuesday, September 4. If successful, President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court would solidify a conservative majority on the court for generations. Senate hearings begin on September 4th, and it will take just a simple majority to confirm him to our nation’s highest court, putting our rights and our democracy at risk. Kavanaugh has consistently sided with corporate profits over people - and does not believe sitting presidents can be investigated. Republicans are trying to push through his confirmation while at the same time blocking judge Kavanaugh’s full record.

    • Understand Indivisible Guide’s 2-step strategy to #StopKavanaugh. Step 1 is to demand that all 49 Democratic Senators vote NO! Step 2 is to persuade 2 Republican Senators to break with their party and vote NO!

    • Do you part to make it happen. If you are from a state with a Democratic Senator, check this list and see if your senator has committed to opposing Kavanaugh. If they have not committed publicly to voting no, make the call to tell them it’s time to stop Kavanaugh now. Use Indivisible’s sample call scripts for both Democratic and Republican senators to call your Senators ASAP, then again on Tuesday, Sept. 4 and tell them to oppose Kavanaugh!

    • Signal boost in critical states. The votes of Senators in WEST VIRGINIA, NORTH DAKOTA, or INDIANA are crucial - and Senators in MAINE and ALASKA can be persuaded to break party lines! Sit down and make a list of everyone you know living and/or voting in those states. Then send them an email with links to Indivisible’s scripts, telling them why you think it’s so important to #StopKavanaugh. Ask them to please call their Senators today!

  • Sprint to Get Out the Vote! Just 64 days until the midterms. Let’s make every day count - and stay united in our efforts to elect progressive candidates across the board!

    • Join our global GOTV strategy call! We’re having a call on September 5th, 2:30pm EST to organize our efforts - pick a person from your group to join our call and get tips and tricks to register people from wherever you are. Send us an email at engage.with.page@gmail.com to join the call!

    • GOTV among US-Americans abroad VoteFromAbroad.Org has the info you need to register your friends abroad. In the meantime, reach out to schools, universities, churches, clubs, and other groups bringing together US-Americans where you live, and ask if they need help registering. Don’t forget to use this form to organize and track the number of people you register to vote and tweet us @PAGEofdemocracyto tell us about your efforts, using #NotTooFarAwayToVote!

    • Make a pledge to GOTV when it matters most! Studies show the most effective way to get potential voters to actually go to the polls is via conversations on the weekend before Election Day (this year, Nov. 2-5). A coalition led by Swing Left is organizing #TheLastWeekend, where activists have already pledged over 10,000 volunteer hours to GOTV that weekend. How many hours can YOU give to save our democracy? Sign up here.

    • Sign up to phone bank with Democrats Abroad! According to DA, voters who are contacted from abroad are more than 3 times as likely to request a ballot! First, sign up for an account with Democrats Abroad. Then, click here to sign up to call voters to *asked* to be contacted and reminded about how to vote. You’ll be set up to call other voters to help them register.

*** Thank you for your progressive action ***
